Cornershop week 13th-20th March – try the ‘Judy Sucks a Lemon’ cocktail (sour, sweet, chilli, fresh) and enjoy lots of Cornershop music on the Dishoom soundtrack…
We love Cornershop. The great band, that is, rather than shops on corners. (We do also really like shops on corners, as it happens.)
And from Sunday it will be Cornershop week at Dishoom.
We loved bopping up and down to Brimful of Asha and then one day actually hearing the words and thinking they were pretty cool. Isn’t it great that Asha means hope and is also Asha Bhosle the great Indian singer (the one that our parents listen to) we thought. Everybody does need a bosom for a pillow. English friends asked for explanations – making us feel kind of smug that we knew. And wasn’t that video great?
We smiled when we heard the album title ‘When I was born for the 7th time’ and laughed when we heard ‘6am Jallander Sher!’ Jallander is the kind of place that just has humour in its name, even better when said loudly, for some reason. It is indeed Indian Tobacco my friend. It’s gently witty subversion. The knowing smile, which makes it hip to be desi (that means from the homeland, for those of you that aren’t).
So when the band contacted us and asked us whether the great Roger Sargent (yes, him, those photos!) could shoot Cornershop at Dishoom, we were delighted to help.
And then when Ben and Tjinder (first names, are you impressed?) asked if they could do an exclusive listening for the album launch here at Dishoom, we were pretty smiley.
So this Sunday, come along to Dishoom and we’ll be playing the new album, ‘Cornershop and the Double O Groove of’. It’s a mix of Punjabi folk and lo-fi hip-hop according to the Guardian, who also thought it was fab. And Bubbly Kaur’s vocals are brilliant. We’ll be playing the album, you can order from Dishoom’s delicious menu, and Ben and Tjinder will be around to say hello (gasp!)
And the week after that will be a kind of Cornershop week at Dishoom – lots of great Cornershop music will be playing, and you’ll be able to buy our crazy new cocktail called ‘Judy Sucks a Lemon’ named in honour of a Cornershop album. (The drink tastes like it should with a name like that – sour, sweet, chilli and fresh!)
Its not often you get the chance to make 1 + 1 = 3, but if you ever do - you should grab it with both hands. Because these are the moments you will remember, the ones you will cherish, the ones that makes it all worthwhile.
