The story that sits behind the retro-futuristic design is that of a young girl in Bombay who is transported from 1953 to an imagined 2023, where she discovers superpowers. It’s 1973. Opposite the Bombay Stock Exchange, a newly refreshed café swells with exquisitely made modern-style furniture and newly painted art. The café is the swishest in town, pinned against a backdrop of towering promise, opportunity, fortune. And loss.

...what a terrific trip! In the ‘60s, young Indians started hankering after Western styles. ‘Beat’ bands in Bombay belted out versions of the latest rock’n’roll hits. A whirlwind of excitement shook both London and Bombay.

Early silver screen talkies brought an intoxicating world of adventure and liberty to Bombay. Thrilling “all talking, singing, dancing” Indian-made dramas cast a glamorous spell over picture houses, and over the city.

Art deco extravagance and quick tempo’d Jazz roared through the city in 1940s Bombay. Swarms of high society were pulled in by sell-out bands, “hot” new music spilled out onto the street. Inside Dishoom Kensington, the golden age of Bombay Jazz is both remembered and reimagined. In the voluptuous curves and chandeliers. In the glitz, glimmer and shine. All are welcome.

You are within a former railway transit shed. To Londoners this would be a warehouse, but to Bombayites, it is a godown. For over 100 years this building passed goods between Britain and the rest of the world. Between London and Bombay. Dishoom King’s Cross found a home in an old Victorian industrial building and tells the story of Indian Independence through its design and artwork. All are welcome.

Gradually, this old Irani café grew to know and love its new community in London. The customers enjoyed hearing its stories of old Bombay, the faded pictures on the walls, the gently swirling ceiling fans. Its eccentricities and quirks.

Scottish botanist, sociologist and town planner Patrick Geddes (1854–1932) was invited to Bombay in 1915. While there, he founded the department of Sociology & Civics at Bombay University, and continually sought to better society by improving civic facilities and creating shared environments.

Circling crows caw and the smell of spice, jasmine and dust mix outside the Lodge Rising Star of Western India. Founded in Bombay in 1843, the first Indian Masonic Lodge had Manockjee Cursetjee as the pioneering first member. Today, the Lodge meets in Bombay’s Freemasons’ Hall, where Bro. Cursetjee’s portrait hangs on the wall, watchfully. Through Dishoom Manchester – itself built within a former Freemasons’ Hall – we hope to share a glimpse of Freemasonry in Bombay.
