Chai pe Charcha: Making Sense of Our Immigrant Selves, with Shamil Thakrar

Break down barriers with us

Chai Pe Charcha is an intimate event series where all are welcome to ‘chat over chai’. This spring, Dishoom co-founder Shamil Thakrar is sitting down to talk identity, displacement, and the role creativity plays in helping us make sense of ourselves.

As a South Asian immigrant, Shamil grew up never quite sure where he belonged. He spent much of his childhood with his nose in a book – perhaps with Tintin and Haddock, or alongside a valorous Rajput prince, or just through the wardrobe with the Pevensey siblings in Narnia – living inside stories that made more sense to him than the real world.

As an adult, he found that building stories – eventually Dishoom itself – gave him a language for who he is and a world big enough to live within. Stories anchored him. Come, join the chat, pick on delectable snackery alongside bottomless chai (all complimentary), and explore how creative outlets root us in our own sense of belonging.

Limited tickets – act with swiftness and certainty! (Kindly only book a spot if you can attend, so others don’t miss out).

The full cost of all tickets will go directly to Seeds of Peace, a non-political charity helping young people from conflict regions learn the skills of making peace. For over 30 years, they’ve brought together the next generation of leaders from across the world – nearly 9,000 Seeds of Peace alumni are united in fostering just and inclusive communities.
