Dishoom Community Iftar: served by Hindu volunteers

Break down barriers with us

This Ramadan, we are once again hosting a special evening. As the sun sets, Muslims will break their fast over a bountiful vegetarian iftar from Dishoom, served by Hindu volunteers at Babu House (our head office in Shoreditch).

We would love to invite you to join us. The evening will include a call to prayer, thoughts from our co-founder (Shamil Thakrar), and a hearty vegetarian feast served by Hindu volunteers. All will then be invited to sit communally and swap stories with friends and strangers alike.

We believe that breaking down barriers is deeply important work. As many of you will know, during Partition, Bombay was spared the bloodshed of Delhi and Calcutta, thanks in part to shared spaces like Irani cafés. Bringing people together from different cultures, classes and religions to break bread can only lead to deeper understanding, less violence and less hatred. Today, that work is more important than ever. Last Ramadan, we helped host the first of these events, and at Diwali, we put on a sumptuous Diwali feast for Hindus, served by Muslims.

Regardless of faith, Ramadan is an opportunity to honour the values of love, giving and unity. As an act of zakat (charity), the full cost of all tickets will go directly to Magic Breakast, helping to end food poverty as a barrier to education.
