In many South Asian families, the path ahead is mapped out early. Kavi has never taken the expected route. He brought Dishoom into the world with his cousin Shamil out of nostalgia for the old Irani cafés of Bombay. He married outside his faith and is raising children of mixed heritage. Whether in work, love or family, Kavi does things his own way – and hopes other South Asians will follow.
